What is a federation address?

Every Stellar account (wallet) has a Public and a Secret key.

Public key (your Stellar address) is used to identify an account and receive funds. It is also known as an account and is used as your account ID. It contains 56 characters and starts with 'G'.

Federation address (or payment address) represents a short memorable alias for your Stellar wallet, which can be used instead of your public key to receive payments on Stellar.

Federation address is linked to the public key of your account and will be resolved into the public key of your Stellar account by StellarTerm and other services on the Stellar network.

You can safely use and share this unique alias with others

Other users can easily enter your federation address instead of typing a long public key to send you funds.

Every federation address is divided into two parts separated by an asterisk (*) - the username and the domain.

Example: alex*stellaterm.com

- alex is the username
- stellaterm.com is the domain

How to get a federation address?

1. To set a federation address for your Stellar account, open the 'Account' page and click the 'Enable' button.

2. Enter the username of your federation address and press the 'Save' button.

There is also an option to edit your federation address if you don’t like the chosen one.

Congrats, your federation address is set! Now you can safely share this unique address with other people so they could send you tokens.

Please note that not all services support federation addresses. In this case, you are free to share your Stellar address to receive payments on StellarTerm.
